2023 Leapfrog New Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade Shows Significant Increase in Healthcare-Associated Infections and Worsening Patient Experience During Pandemic
May 3rd, 2023
The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2023 Hospital Safety Grade released today found the average risk of three healthcare-associated infections spiked to a 5-year high during the COVID-19 pandemic and remain high. “We recognize the tremendous strain the pandemic put on hospitals and their workforce, but alarming findings like these indicate hospitals must recommit to patient safety and build more resilience,” said Leapfrog’s president and CEO Leah Binder. The Safety Grades also show a continued decline in patient experience measures, which are reported by patients and correlated with patient outcomes.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. National findings for the spring 2023 Safety Grades show:
  • Twenty-nine percent of hospitals received an “A,” 26% received a “B,” 39% received a “C,” 6% received a “D,” and less than 1% received an “F.”
  • The top ten states with the highest percentages of “A” hospitals are: New Jersey, Idaho, Utah, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado, Virginia and Massachusetts.
The Safety Grade breakdown for 60 hospitals in our region (southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, southern New Jersey) are: 48% received an “A”, 23% received a “B”, 25% received a “C”, and 3% received a “D”. The Greater Philadelphia Business Coalition on Health is Leapfrog Regional Leader for southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. The New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute is Leapfrog Regional Leader for the state of New Jersey.

We congratulate hospitals in our region listed below that received an “A” in the spring 2023 Safety Grades.
