GPBCH Introduces Antibiotic Resistance Consumer Education Guide
January, 2017 - The Greater Philadelphia Business Coalition on Health (GPBCH) has issued an Antibiotic Resistance Consumer Education Guide for employers, medical providers and other organizations to share with consumers. Overutilization of antibiotics leads to antibiotic resistance. According to the CDC, “each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections.” Studies have estimated that, in the United States, antibiotic resistance adds $20 billion in excess direct health care costs, with additional costs to society for lost productivity as high as $35 billion a year.
